Phrasal verb: keel over

1. If a boat keels over, it turns upside down or onto its side in the water.

Examples of use:

Their boat keeled over in the strong winds.


2. To keel over is to collapse or fall over.

Examples of use:

a) He drank eight bottles of beer in one hour, and keeled over on the pavement.

b) I was feeling ill at work and I keeled over when I stood up.

c) He finished the marathon, but keeled over just past the finish line.

d) That wall needs fixing before it keels over and hurts someone.

  1. Although the boat keeled over and hit him on the head, he still managed to swim to shore.

    Then he promptly keeled over and was rushed to hospital suffering from concussion.

    After four days in hospital he was allowed home.

    When he arrived home he saw the bill for salvaging his boat and he keeled over again, hitting his head on the door, and had to be rushed back to hospital.
