Idiom: hit the hay

To hit the hay is to go to bed.

Examples of use:

a) It's late, and I'm very tired: I'm going to hit the hay now.

b) It's time to hit the hay.

This expression probably has its origins in the fact that people used to sleep on beds of hay, or sacks or mattresses filled with hay.
