Idiom: work on a shoestring

To work on a shoestring is to run a business or project with very little money or capital.

shoestring (noun) – a small amount of money: an amount that is inadequate or only just adequate for your needs.

 

Examples of use:

1. In the first year of my business I had no money and I had to work on a shoestring budget.

2. They worked on a shoestring to produce their latest movie.
